Growing up in LaGrange, I would have never thought of this as a great float trip, but everything is true. This is great fishing also. As for a float trip, I would say April or May, as it is very shallow in spots, you'll have to come when the waters are up, and for the deep muddy river bank you'll have to bank a little north where the river is dredged. It does get really muddy by the boat ramp/Casey's.

Went through the Illinois wildflower, the wet area plants, site and you might check the false pimpernel and the clammy hedge hyssop.

Kansas site is easier to use, since you can look directly at pictures and not have to open every one from a list of names.

Having a tough time finding a resource for snails. We have at least two species of hard shelled land snails around here,

I suspect no little screech owl would have been able to come near the box with that masked bandit in it. I can only remember how much fun we had getting rid of them in Quincy... They probably still have lots of bats in D building up at north campus.

Nice shots...interesting to see the red striping on the finch. Have had a couple of redbreasted nuthatches. Have stopped filling the suet feeder since the feathered rats have shown up. Bluebirds hang around a lot, are most interested in the birdbath all the time. Not much available water up here in the hills, so get birds seeking water.

I became the partner of a long timer here in Lawrence. All told we saw 51 species in the area we were covering. Luckily, it had a lake and so got to see 14 species of waterfowl, including 3 white pelicans. Lots of Canada geese and about 400 common mergansers. Yellow rumped warblers were still around. We did see 4 bald eagles, 18 red tailed hawks and 3 northern harriers. Robins were super abundant, in excess of 2000. Nearly as populous as starlings. Saw five species of woodpeckers, including yellow bellied sapsuckers, but no pileated. My partner had gone out early to search for owls, but we found a great horned about 2:45 in the afternoon!

Beautiful shot of the titmouse. Nice looking female sparrow. Are you doing the Christmas Bird Count? I have tied into the count here in Lawrence. My guess is that will be doing part of the area around a lake. Clinton Lake. Our feeders are drawing the typical winter birds. Still have bluebirds hanging around and a red tail hawk, as well...that one does not come down to the feeder.
